Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens

Genus/species: Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens (Gluconobacter liquefaciens)

Gram Stain: Negative

Morphology:

  • Cell: Rod-shaped
  • Colony: Off white, circular, raised
  • Liquid Growth: Pellicle formed

Physiological Traits:

Gluconacetobacter johannae

Genus/species (aliases): Gluconacetobacter johannae

Gram Stain: Negative

Morphology:

  • Cell: rods with rounded ends, approximately 1.5-1.9 micrometer and 0.5-0.6 micrometer; occur singly, in pairs or in short chains. Motile by means of peritrichous flagella.
  • Colony: light brown to brown colonies.
  • Liquid Growth:

Physiological Traits:

Gluconacetobacter intermedius

Genus/species: Gluconacetobacter intermedius

Gram Stain: Gram negative

Morphology:
Cell: ellipsoidal to rod-shaped
Colony: Pale; forms a zone of clearing on calcium carbonate medium
Liquid Growth: thick pellicle formed

Gluconacetobacter hansenii

Genus/species: Gluconacetobacter hansenii

Gram Stain: Gram negative

Morphology:
Cell: Rods, cell wall contains lipopolysaccharides

Colony:

  • LG: Creates white/opaque colonies that are round, smooth and dry
  • GYC: The bacteria converts ethanol into acetic acid which results in a clear instead of opaque substrate.

Liquid Growth: Produces, “rigid pellicle-type bacterial cellulose.” (Park et al. 2004)

Gluconacetobacter europaeus

Genus/species: Gluconacetobacter europaeus since 1998 (Ga. europaeus) (Acetobacter europaeus prior to 1998).

Gram Stain: Negative

Morphology:
Cell: non-motile and non-flagellated rods. Most occur in pairs
Colony: in the presence of CaCO3 a zone of clearing will be obvious around the colonies dues to the neutralization of the acid generated.
Liquid Growth:

Physiological Traits:

Gluconacetobacter entanii

Genus/species (aliases): Gluconacetobacter entanii

Gram Stain: Gram negative

Morphology:
Cell: non motile, non flagellated rods, preferentially in pairs
Colony: Small round light grey to light brown colony
Liquid Growth: (ie dispersed, pellicle, film, clumpy)
