Established in 1974, the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG) is an advocate for farmers, providing leadership on public policies, research and education programs, sustainable farming practices and trade policy to enhance the California winegrape growing business and our communities.
Brad Webb died in 1999 at age 77. He was an influential winemaker at Hanzell Vineyards and a founding partner of Freemark Abbey Winery. His brother, A. Dinsmore Webb, served on the V&E Faculty for many years. The brothers began their foray into the world of beverages by making root beer in the family kitchen. In 1982, Webb was honored with the American Society of Enologists Merit Award. A soft-spoken and introspective man, Webb lived with Parkinson's Disease for many years and remained an active participant in the Napa Valley wine community until his passing.
Founded in 1912 by TW Boswell, World Cooperage is one of the top producers of American, French, and Eastern European oak barrels in the wine industry. Four generations of Boswells have been involved in the family business. Today, it is headed by John Boswell as CEO and he is asssited by Brad Boswell, Joe Boswell, and Amie Boswell Dewane. The company still expounds the values of it's founder: committment to a quality product with quality service. The company enjoys an international reputation for doing just that.
Barry Bergman's interest is wines grew from his older brother's experiences in the restaurant business. This compelled Barry to enroll in our Fermentation Science program. While still a student, Bergman worked in the cellar at RH Phillips; he was offered the position of assistant winemaker in 1989 and was appointed winemaker in 1994. Bergman has led the development of the company's four brands: Toasted Head, EXP, RH Phillips, and Kempton Clark. A life-long-learner, Bergman enjoys traveling to wineries in Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, Canada, and Australia.
Antonio Perelli-Minetti died in 1976 at the age of 96. His vigor, enthusiasm, spirit, and knowledge characterized his every day. He left Italy at age 20 to come to America and helped to create the wine industry in California. He teamed up with family friend, C.P. Rossi, of Italian Swiss Colony and eventually became one of California's most prominent winemakers. In 1936, Perelli-Minetti founded the winery that still carries the family name.
Friends and family contributed to the student loan fund that benefits V&E students at UC Davis.
American Vineyard Magazine reaches a vast majority of grapegrowers in California, more than any other magazine of its kind. Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Joseph Malcolm, established the scholarship in the late 1990's. Malcolm's publishing empire includes: California Dairy Magazine, Pacific Nut Producer, and Vegetables West Magazine.
The scholarship is for undergraduate or graduate student in Viticulture with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Past recipients include: Cecilia Aguero, Samuel Barros, Kristin Lowe, Shannon Reis, and Corey Barnes.
