The situation with water conservation became a huge issue in 2013 and has carried over to 2014 for all of California. It?s time for every winemaker and vineyard manager to look more closely at how we, as an industry, can become more sustainable by practicing better management of this precious natural resource. But winegrapes are, of course, a very unusual commodity because, after years of research, it has been shown that careful monitoring of vineyard water status, practiced in conjunction with some level of regulated deficit irrigation, can actually produce a better quality product in most instances. The double gold of this practice is that not only does this careful monitoring and delivery of water mitigate the impact on vine health, it can be used to maximize yields, and make better wine!
To further that goal, we?ve brought together some of the most progressive, practical experts in the field of irrigation management and winemaking to address how we can make the best of what looks to be a difficult year for all of agriculture. They?ll discuss all the latest methods available to monitor vine water status, along with a complete discussion of the methods most commonly used in vineyards today. We?ll have a panel of vineyard managers who have practiced sustainable water management, and a panel of winemakers who have received the benefit of those practices. This is really a must-be-there event and we hope to see many of you at Freeborn on Thursday, February 20, 2014 for a full day of discussion about how to deal with water in 2014 and beyond. This is as good a time as any to start adopting sustainable water management practices in every aspect of the wine industry.
VENSource and The Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis are proud to present these very popular Wine Flavor 101 Current Issues series of classes to the wine industry. As such, they are targeted to wine professionals with some chemical and technical background. These seminars are very popular and often sell out before the event date, so be sure you register early. The agenda, which may be revised slightly before the seminar, is as follows:
