Design/Build team selected for UC Davis Teaching and Research Winery and August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis is pleased to announce that a team has been selected to design and construct a building to house the Teaching and Research Winery and the August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory. The facility will serve the Departments of Viticulture and Enology and Food Science and Technology and will complete the Robert Mondavi Institute academic complex. Through the design competition process, the campus received numerous qualifications packets and selected six design/build teams to interview. Based on the interviews, three teams were chosen to prepare and submit schematic design level proposals. The proposals were evaluated on architectural design as well as achievement of program elements, sustainability goals, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Team organization and experience were also a factor.

The selected design builder is BNB Norcal from San Mateo, CA along with the firm, Flad Architects from San Francisco. BNB has experience in construction of wineries, breweries, pilot plants and university facilities. Flad specializes in planning and design of innovative facilities in the dynamic fields of academia, healthcare, and science and technology. Other key firms for the design include Gayner Engineering, KPW Structural Engineers, Creegan+D'Angelo Civil Engineers and HLA Landscape Architects.

This 32,000 square foot building is highly complex. The space includes a working, small‐scale winery, brewery, food processing facility and milk processing room all functioning for both research and teaching needs. In addition to the main processing rooms, support spaces for each department include a laboratory, classroom, offices, controlled temperature rooms and equipment and storage rooms. The building will achieve a minimum of US Green Building Council's LEED‐NC Gold certification. To obtain this certification the building is required to make significant achievements in the categories of site sustainability, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, materials & resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation & design process.

The construction and equipping of the facility is entirely funded by private donors with lead gifts from Robert Mondavi for the Teaching and Research Winery and the Anheuser Busch Foundation for the August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory. More than 150 individuals, alumni, corporate friends and foundations have also contributed to reach the $16.5 million goal for construction. Fundraising continues to equip the facility.

This building will be a beautiful complement to the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. Materials, finishes, scale and orientation on the site serve to enclose the existing courtyard and complete the vision for the complex. The facility is in design development phase and planned for University of California Regent's design approval in January 2009. Production of working drawings will follow with the start of construction expected in July 2009 and occupancy in July 2010.
