Dinner Under the Winkler Vine 2006
This year’s Dinner Under the Winkler Vine was a definite success. The dinner is one of the cornerstone events for the Davis Enology and Viticulture Organization (DEVO). The fundraiser features a five-course meal prepared by re-known chefs, who donated their time and talents preparing a different course, which is then paired with a specific wine. The dinner also featured a silent auction of wine and wine related items for the highest bidder.
The magnificent five course meal was prepared by noted California chefs and served by the DEVO club members. Nick Johnson of Piper Johnson Catering in Calistoga prepared Quenelles of Scallop and Lobster with spring vegetables and a creamy lobster broth accompanied by Navarro Vineyards 2004 Anderson Valley Pinot Gris. Bruno Massuger, of Center Club in Costa Mesa prepared pan-seared barramundi with roasted shallots and white asparagus in tomato beurre blanc with Hanzel Vineyards 2003 Sonoma Valley Chardonnay. Jim Phillips of Pamplemousse Grille in Solana Beach served carnaroli risotto with morel and porcini mushrooms, duck confit ragout in Pinot noir glaze with Acacia 2004 St. Claire Vineyard Carneros Pinot noir. Ed Mitchell of Montreux Gold and Country Club, in Reno, Nevada, prepared the entrée. He prepared trio of beef, poached roulade of tenderloin with duxelles of mushrooms, grilled marinated flat iron steak with horseradish mashed potatoes, and braised prime short ribs with roasted root vegetables, with a 2002 Cain Five Napa Valley wine. Dessert was prepared by Andrew Bard of National University, La Jolla, California, who prepared fresh cherry and candied almond clafoutis with almond-cinnamon gelato, Japanese Sakura tea and crème anglaise with 2001 Dolce Napa Valley wine.
Attendees dined under the lush canopy of the Winkler Vine, a 60 by 60 foot canopy of Mission grapes planted in the memory of Albert J. Winkler. Dr. Winkler chaired the Department of Viticulture and Enology from 1937-1957 and authored several landmark papers during his career at UCD. The Winkler Vine resides on the department vineyards near the UCD airport.
Plans are currently underway for the 2007 Dinner Under the Winkler Vine, and is tentatively set for the last weekend in May. Please visit the DEVO website for future details regarding the 2007 event.
