Title Harvest Assistant Winemaker
Employer Zialena Winery
Employment Location Geyserville, CA
Company Description Zialena is a family owned, fourth generation winery in Geyserville, CA that focuses on premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from our Alexander Valley estate. We have a brand new winery and tasting room, and all the Ferrari equipment that goes with it. For the 2018 harvest, we will be making about 3,500 cases of wine, almost entirely from estate fruit. In addition to cab and zin, we will be producing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and a rose from Sangiovese.
Type Internship
Pay Scale DOE
Employment Start Date ~8/15/18
Employment End Date ~11/15/18
Job Description We are a small team, with essentially a winemaker (me) and a harvest assistant winemaker (you). We’ll also have some extra help here and there, along with our owner who functions as a consulting winemaker. But basically, it’s a two man show, and I need someone who wants to do everything: labwork, cellar work, vineyard, tech tastings, etc. This is an amazing opportunity to make that leap from harvest intern to assistant winemaker for the season.

What is required of you:
-a good palate and some motivation and drive to become a winemaker
-at least one previous harvest where you learned something
-a degree or current study of viticulture and enology desired
-forklift experience preferred, but not required
-a willingness to do everything: cleaning drains, contributing to tasting discussions, running lab analysis, doing pumpovers, monitoring fermentations, making additions, recordkeeping, sorting fruit, etc.
-ability to handle physical labor for long hours at times
-ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly
-ability to work a handful of weekends from about August 15th through November 15th
-you must provide transportation and housing

If you can handle all that, then here’s what we can offer you:
-the opportunity to take the next step towards becoming a winemaker by leaving Zialena with a strong winemaking skillset. Have you worked a harvest where you did a lot of grunt work and didn’t learn much? Me too, I’ve been there. While there will still be cleaning and grunt work, I will make sure to expose you to all aspects of the winemaking process and mentor you through unfamiliar but important areas of winemaking. The goal is to have you arrive at Zialena as an intern and leave as an assistant winemaker. By the end of harvest, you will work independently at times and your opinion will be valued by the winemaking team.

Please send resumes, cover letters, and at least one reference to Jesse at In the cover letter, please tell me what wines you like to drink and your favorite genres of music. You can keep the cover letter brief, no need to copy and paste one from google.
