Job Description As Lab Manager, you will direct and inspire a technical team responsible for developing and maintaining analytical systems to assure the performance of physical and chemical analyses of grapes, grape products, alcoholic beverages and water and related materials. You and your team will calibrate equipment; carry out analyses of wines and finished products as needed in order to support winemakers, the bottling facility and production teams. It will be essential to understand and drive food safety initiatives to secure and maintain standards to ISO 20000, IFS standards, FDA and other agency requirements. You will provide data and reports in useful formats for the specific customer as needed and troubleshoot issues with analytical test results and equipment.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

LAB OPERATIONS & ANALYSES

• Demonstrates and directs advanced instrumentation techniques, such as GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS and inorganic analysis via plasma spectroscopy.
• Oversee wine quality analysis pertaining to grape maturity, fermentation, cellar/aging operations, storage, tank/line sanitation and bottling.
• Oversees routine wine analyses utilizing appropriate methods as required. Must be able to establish priorities as it relates to the urgencies of incoming samples due to bottling, adjustments, shipment certification and other requirements.
• Ensures accurate operations of all laboratory equipment/instrumentation, and ability to troubleshoot when necessary to ensure accurate results.
• Maintain and calibrate analytical instruments in the laboratory in optimum operation condition.
• Develop, document, and validate analytical methods for wine which are compliant with Good Laboratory Practices, as needed. Maintain accurate and complete records of all laboratory work, ensuring the proper use and preparation of standardized chemical solutions used in the laboratory.




MATERIALS AND RESOURCES PLANNING

• Executes the planning, data collection, analysis and reporting of monthly analysis on inventory of wines held in cellar.
• Recommends new equipment and assists in selecting suppliers and appropriate accessories for proposed equipment.
• Ensures the maintenance of inventories, ordering supplies.
• Effectively applies appropriate SOPs to projects and keeps notes.
• Identifies opportunities for improvement and makes constructive suggestions for change.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATION
• Positively contribute to the achievement of the team objectives and goals.
• Contribute, through regular meetings, to the development and improvement of the Lab and quality team.
• Maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders.
• Assigns special projects as needed/requested by the Director of Winemaking & Winery Operations, including, but not limited to, program analysis, training and development.
• Perform statistical analysis of experimental data and equipment validation results. Present results in report, graphical and/or chart format. Draw conclusions and provide recommendations to Management as required.
COMPLIANCE

• Understands and ensures compliance to all safety requirements. Drives behavioral safety culture.
• With Director of Safety and Risk Management, develops policy and procedure.
• Understands and ensures regulatory compliance and works collaboratively with regulatory/governmental agencies.

FOOD SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain and update IFS certifications
• Maintain and update CCOF certification
• Maintain HACCP certification
• Maintain and update GMPs

Must Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Enology or Biology and a minimum of 5 years industry experience or equivalent combination work/education. MS and research experience preferred.
• Good working and theoretical knowledge of analytical instrumentation.
• Previous experience in wine or spirits industry with prior knowledge of commercial programming preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products with intermediate to advanced Excel
• Ability to work in an environment that has changing priorities and multiple projects
• Ability to manage a team
• Strategic thinker – demonstrates ability to see big picture, anticipate changes and impact on trends, asks what if questions, develops recommendations
• Ability to apply mathematical skills for preparing and verifying analysis with a strong attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis, carry up to 40 lbs. & push and pull up to 20 lbs. on an occasional basis; ability to sit and work at a desk for long periods of time; requires ability to walk and stand; reach outward and upward, climb, crawl, squat, kneel, and bend; requires hand and finger dexterity for keyboarding and working at computer for extended periods of time.

Our California winery operation includes 1000 acres of farmed vineyards and over 3 million cases produced annually. Operations include Mendocino County winery, production and vineyard locations. The company employs 300 across the United States.

Fetzer Vineyards’ corporate office is located at 12901 Old River Rd Hopland, CA 95449 Hopland is a small town of less than 800 people located at the start of the Redwoods of Northern California. It is about a two hour drive, along scenic U.S. Route 101, north of San Francisco. Company vehicle provided and company housing available.
